What Is the Modified Bavarian Formula?
A 75% in an Indian university and a 75% in a Nigerian university don’t carry the same weight, since grading strictness, curve policies, and passing thresholds vary by country and even by institution. That’s why Germany doesn’t accept raw percentages. Instead, admissions teams recalculate your grade relative to your own university’s scale, using this formula:
German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Maximum Grade − Your Grade) / (Maximum Grade − Minimum Passing Grade)
This formula was developed by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and is now the standard reference method used by uni-assist, the centralized application body most German universities rely on, and by individual university admissions offices across Germany.

What Is a Good German Grade for Master's Admission?

Indian CGPA to German GPA converter — how it works
Most Indian universities use either a percentage system or a 10-point CGPA scale, and both convert cleanly using the same formula above.
If your university uses percentages out of 100, set maximum grade to 100, minimum passing grade to 40 (or whatever your university’s official passing mark is — check your transcript or consult your registrar), and enter your actual percentage.
If your university uses a 10-point CGPA, multiply your CGPA by 9.5 to get an approximate percentage, which is the standard conversion used by the Association of Indian Universities. Then use that percentage in the calculator above.
